Paths to WETT Certification

How to become WETT Certified (updated August 2018)

Step 1: Register for the Code Compliance course (3 credits) via the WETT website.

Step 2: Complete the Code Compliance course by scoring 70% or better on the Code Compliance examination.
Please note: You are now a student member and cannot use the WETT logo. You must complete your certification within five years of passing the Code Compliance course examination.

Step 3: Decide on which path you need to take to become certified and register for the remaining courses in the following order:

  • WETT Certification Technician and/or Advisor + SITE Basic Inspector
  • 3 Credits - Code Compliance
  • 2 Credits - Wood-burning Systems
  • 1 Credit - SITE Basic Inspection
  • Requires a verifiable declaration of at least 80 weeks industry experience, including at least 30 installations of wood-burning appliances for technicians, signed by student, plus a letter of reference and a photo.
  • 6 credits earned
  • WETT Certification Chimney Sweeping + SITE Basic Inspector
  • 3 Credits - Code Compliance
  • 2 Credits - Wood-burning Systems
  • 1 Credit - SITE Basic Inspection
  • 2 Credits - Chimney Sweeping
  • Requires a verifiable declaration of at least 80 weeks industry experience including at least 30 sweeps of wood-burning appliances, signed by student, plus a letter of reference and a photo.
  • 8 credits earned
  • WETT Certification SITE Basic Inspector
  • 3 Credits - Code Compliance
  • 2 Credits - Wood-burning Systems
  • 1 Credit - SITE Basic Inspection
  • Requires a verifiable declaration of at least 80 weeks of field inspection experience, including at least 30 inspections of wood-burning appliances, plus a letter of reference and a photo
  • 6 credits earned
  • SITE Comprehensive Inspector
  • * You must have been WETT certified as an installer and/or/sweep for at least two years.
  • 2 credits - Chimney Sweeping (if not already taken)
  • 1 credit - SITE Comprehensive Inspection
  • Requires a verifiable declaration of 160 weeks of industry experience, which includes at least 30 installations and/or 30 sweeps of wood-burning appliances, plus a letter of reference confirming 160 weeks of industry experience and at least 30 installations and/or 30 sweeps of wood-burning appliances, and a photo.

Step 4: At your third WETT course (SITE Basic Inspection) you will receive a declaration form. Be sure to complete this. You need to pass each examination by scoring 70% or higher. If your declaration form and letter of reference are submitted correctly and clearly prove that you have accomplished the required 80 weeks of experience outlined in your selected path (and you have successfully completed the examination), you will receive your WETT certification in the mail within eight weeks of the exams being received at the WETT National office.

The WETT Continuing Education Program

There are several Continuing Education (CE) courses available. In order to maintain certification, all WETT certificate holders are required to successfully complete at least one WETT course every five years. By attending CE courses, you can hone your skills in the specialty areas that your work involves. You can also achieve WETT Advanced Certification by earning a total of 9 credits with the following courses: Code Compliance, Wood-burning Systems, SITE Basic Inspection, Chimney Sweeping, SITE Comprehensive Inspection and achieving at least 85% on every WETT exam that you write. You must also have a minimum of 160 weeks industry experience.

Additional WETT Certification

Step 1: You must already be WETT certified.

Step 2: Decide on which additional certification you wish to pursue and register for the courses:

  • WETT Certification Pellet Technician
  • 1 Credit - Pellet Heating Technology
  • Requires proof of at least 15 installations of pellet appliances and proof of completion of at least two manufacturer/ distributor pellet appliance service courses.
  • 1 credit earned
  • WETT Certification Pellet Sweep
  • 1 Credit - Pellet Heating Technology
  • Requires proof of servicing at least 15 pellet appliances and proof of completion of at least two manufacturer/distributor pellet appliance service courses.
  • 1 credit earned
  • WETT Certification Pellet Advisor
  • 1 Credit - Pellet Heating Technology
  • Requires proof of selling/advising on the purchase of at least 15 pellet appliance and proof of completion of at least two manufacturer/distributor pellet appliance service courses.
  • 1 credit earned

Step 3: You need to pass each examination by scoring 70% or higher. If your supporting documentation is submitted correctly and clearly proves that you have accomplished the required experience outlined in your selected path (and you have successfully completed the examination), you will receive your WETT certification in the mail within eight weeks of the exams being received at the WETT National office.
